Sino Esthappan Earns ASA and SSSP Recognition for Research

Congratulations to Sino Esthappan on a series of impressive achievements! His paper, “The Mechanics of Algorithmic Discordance: When Attorneys and Judges Disagree with Pretrial Risk Assessments,” was featured at the ASA’s Junior Theorists Symposium at UIC. His article “Assessing the Risks of Risk Assessments: Data-Driven Judicial Decision-Making in U.S. Pretrial Hearings” earned an honorable mention in the ASA Sociology of Law Section’s Distinguished Graduate Student Paper competition. In addition, the paper “Generationally Mediated Dating: Managing Pleasure and Risk Across Changing Sexual Visibility Platforms,” co-authored with Facundo Suenzo (PhD ’25, NU’s MTS Program), received an honorable mention from the ASA Aging and the Life Course Section’s graduate student paper competition. Finally, Sino was elected Vice Chair of the Law & Society Division of the Society for the Study of Social Problems for the 2025–27 term.
