Dissertation Title: “Transnationalizing Gender, Medicine, and Standardization: Gender-Affirming Healthcare in Thailand and the United States”
In my dissertation, I examine how the creation and implementation of standardized clinical practice guidelines in gender-affirming healthcare for transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) folks are shaped by tensions between professional and lay expertise and the local and global. I study these tensions on a transnational scale with a special focus on Thailand and the United States. Throughout the project, I use a variety of qualitative research methods, including in-depth interviews with providers, activists, and patients in Thailand and the United States; ethnographic observation of workshops, trainings, and conferences for transgender health; and content analysis of medical journals, clinical practice guidelines, and manuals.
My research has been supported by the National Science Foundation GRFP, the U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies, the Sexualities Project at Northwestern, the Buffett Institute for Global Studies, and the Dispute Resolution Research Center.
